Orach, David Paul

(1791-1865)
   French scholar. He was born in Strasbourg. In 1819 he was appointed head of the Paris Jewish School, but in 1823 he was baptized into the Catholic Church. He worked in Paris as an expert in Hebrew and took part in the publication of the Venice Bible. From 1832 to 1842 he served as librarian of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith in Rome and published poems in honour of the pope and the cardinals. Returning to Paris, he collaborated with the Abbe J. P. Migne in the publication of his Patrologia and edited Origen's Hexapla. He also published books and pamphlets justifying his conversion.
